September already??

Wow! I can't believe how fast this year is going already! We are already halfway through our first semester and moving quickly. Below you will find a few pictures of our classroom. Hopefully I will get to conference with all parents so you can see it in person! :-) Keep scrolling for more pictures!

Also, if you are looking for websites your child can work on at home try some of these. Most of them are licensed programs and the students will have to login for them to work.
mobymax.com - math
mathplayground.com -  math (free)
thinkcentral - math
raz-kids.com - reading
mobymax.com - reading (coming soon!)

During our first week together we read a story about a little girl that said things to others and hurt their feelings. To help the students understand that once they say something they can't take it back we did an experiment with toothpaste. The students had to squeeze all of the toothpaste out of the bottle, which they loved! But then they had to try and get it all back into the tube. They had no idea they were going to have to do this. After the experiment we talked about how you can apologize for your words (just like you can put some of the toothpaste back) but the feelings that are hurt will always be there. The kids loved it! :-)

We just finished our first chapter in math, addition and subtraction. The student's books come with a vocabulary game which you can see them playing below. We also have a "grab and go" math kit that the students can pull games and centers from when they finish things early. These are a great way for the students to continue practicing the 3rd grade skills even when we are done with the chapter.

We have just started our science chapter on classifying animals. The students got to put together their own "backbone" to see how it moves and helps animals.

Open House and Supply List

Open House
Drake Open House is right around the corner! 3rd grade parents are invited to attend Monday, August 10th, from 6-8pm. Parents should meet in the gym for a brief welcoming and introductions before moving into the classrooms.

Drake Homepage - click here to find the flyer with all the information for open house! :-)

Supply List
You can find the master copy on the drake homepage (click the link above) or use this list. This list is specific to our classroom and I have put the items in order of importance. The items at the top of the list are the most important things your child will need on the first day of school. The items towards the bottom can be brought in the throughout the first week of school.

·         1” binder with clear pocket front
·         3-hole pouch with zipper - this is the only item added to the school list :-)
·         1 pair of scissors (Fiskars preferred)
·         8 folders – at least 2 with 3 hole punch (multiple colors if possible)
·         5 – 10” X 8” wide ruled spiral notebooks
·         1 pack wide ruled loose leaf notebook paper
·         3 colored highlighters (no neon please)
·         2-3 packs of #2 pencils (feel free to sharpen some of these prior to the first day!)
·         10-12 glue sticks
·         1 bottle Elmer’s glue
·         1pack crayons 48 count (Crayola preferred)
·         1 black fine point Sharpie marker
·         4 black dry erase markers
·         1 small art supply box 8” X 5” X 2”
·         Headphones with 1/8” plug (not ear buds - the over the head ones seem to work best)
·         3 blue ball point pens
·         1 hand held pencil sharpener (with receptacle)
·         1roll of paper towels
·         2 boxes of Kleenex
·         Clipboard
·         1solar calculator (any inexpensive)
·         1 pack 3” X 3” Post-it notes
·         1 package of cap erasers
·         1 pack white copy paper
·         1 package of quart or gallon size plastic bags (I have plenty of sandwich baggies!)
·         1 small hand sanitizer
·         1 pack 3” X 5” index cards (color or white)
·         1- 8pack broad tip markers
·         2 to 3 jumbo stretch book covers

On the first day of school your child will be putting together a binder that they will carry to school and home every day. In their binder they will clip the 3-hole pouch with zipper, their planner, and a folder. It is very important they have a binder with a clear pocket on the front so they can slip the cover down in. I have already put one together to show you all at open house!

Hope to see you all there!

Looking forward to a new year!

Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by my classroom blog. This website is a great way for me to share pictures and news from our classroom. To start this year off let me tell you a little bit about myself!

This is going to be my sixth year as an elementary teacher. After college I decided to pick up and move to Florida! My first four years were spent in Citrus Springs where I taught first grade for two years and third grade for two years. I then decided to move back to Ohio where I was born and raised. This will be my second year teaching third grade in Strongsville and I am very excited!

This is going to be a very busy year for me as I am in the process of planning my June 2016 wedding and I couldn't be more excited! I have a lot on my plate, but wouldn't want it any other way!

I will post an updated supply list that will be more geared toward my classroom. I will put a * next to the items that are different from the Drake supply list to make it easier for you. If you have already purchased the supply boxes from school that will work just fine! :-)

I look forward to meeting you all in August and hope you are enjoying what is left of summer vacation!
